FALL 2014

Song: Bend Ova - Artist: Lil Jon, Tyga - September 2014

Get "Bend Ova" by Lil Jon @ http://amzn.com/B00LPQMBFK
It's also on iTunes.

ABOUT THIS VIDEO: Yes, this song is definitely "Turn Down for What" 2.0. And while we still don't have the answer to what we're supposed to turn down for or even what he says before "another round of shots", we decided to move on to the next big jam. We weren't really down to dance to another instrumental only track, but this one had an actual rap verse on it to get down to, so we went with it. However, that verse did bring up a new issue for us, therefore ...

DISCLAIMER: FUNKMODE does not approve of the lyrical content of Tyga's verse. To state it more formally and specifically, it sucks and he's an idiot.

Does that make us hypocrites? Yeah, kinda. But, we're making up for that by announcing right here and now that we are not going to dance to another song that we don't support lyrically just because the beat's dope. Does that mean no profanity or booty shaking references? Nope. It just means that the lyrics have to support the song and not sound like they were written by a really dumb five-year old who learned English by watching videos from World Star Hip Hop (which is also run by idiots who we don't support). Feel free to police us on this new resolution. No more idiotic lyrics for FUNKMODE. Deal? Deal!

As always, thanks for watching, subscribing and supporting the FUNK!

Song: Strange Money - Artist: Kutt Calhoun - October 2014

It's also on iTunes.

ABOUT THIS VIDEO: We love Tech N9ne and we love his label Strange Music. Until last month Kutt Calhoun was part of that crew and we loved him too. Now he left Strange and we hate him. Jussssskidding. He's cool. In fact, maybe too cool for the weirdos over at Strange. But we won't hold that against him. He still gots dope tracks like this one which we've had for a while but hadn't thought to choreograph to until it popped back up on our playlist recently. The heavy melody line fit perfectly with what we wanted to do choreographically and so we turned it loose on our students.

This is one of the shortest videos we've turned out in a while. People are having trouble with attention spans these days. Hopefully this sucks em in. Also, we're so ADD that we couldn't even put together actual movement for the FUNKMODE section in the middle. Just a bunch of pictures, stop-motion style, cut every single beat and more. If we don't start to learn to focus again, this is how every single music video is going to be in the future. A bunch of seizure-inducing flashing pictures that make no sense but hypnotize us long enough for advertisers to infect our brains with the latest thing we need to buy to save our lives. In case you were wondering, when we're not dancing, we're amateur Conspiracy Theorists.

Song: Hearsay - Artist: Calvin Richardson - November 2014

ABOUT THIS VIDEO: Long story short, in addition to our natural freestyle and flowing movements, we also started to let some Boom Gat creep in here.

You know the drill ... third dance of the session = specialty dance. This time around, the people were craving an R&B dance. But this time, we wanted to add yet another twist ... Boom Gat.

What dat means, you ask? There's a style that has popped up in the street dance/performance/choreographic realm, especially in the Cal/SoCal area over the last few years. It is often called Hip Hop (for lack of a better term) which is a misnomer as it's usually danced to R&B music and is only loosely based in Hip Hop movements. Teachers of this style rarely use counts while instructing, preferring instead to imitate the sounds of the music. This result is something that sounds like, "Okay, so you start in with a boom ... boomgat, ah, boom, boom, gat", hence the "name". The style looks very gestural, minimalist and staccato, as the movements are crafted to follow nearly every syllable and beat available. It's arguably the opposite of how you would freestyle. It's more like putting together a thousand piece choreographic puzzle. As such, it's a very brainy game but can actually look quite beautiful if done well.

Song: DJ Turn It Up - Artist: Yellow Claw - December 2014

Get "DJ Turn It Up" by Yellow Claw @ http://amzn.com/B00FX8HASE
It's also on iTunes.

ABOUT THIS VIDEO: Here it is, our final dance of our 10th anniversary year. We choreographed a dance to another club banger from Yellow Claw ("Slow Down") for the youth classes earlier in the season (http://youtu.be/fZhCglGrKzI) and we knew then that we were saving this one for the adults. We decided to implement a few formation techniques to give our students an opportunity to practice performance style dancing. They had a good time with it and put together some pretty good looking combinations.

And there're the extras! FUNKMODE took a trip to Hollywood at the end of the year and, of course, we used it as an opportunity to make movies! We danced it up just about everywhere and had a funkin' good time doing it. Thanks to the peeps at Universal Studios for showin' us all love! Can't wait to go back!!!
